Chandannagar college to get its second campus

The Chandannagar College is going to get its second campus soon. The new campus is being constructed behind the current building, on the strand road. The new campus will host a three-storied building which is under construction since 2018 and is expected to be complete before Durga Puja this year. The college also has a heritage building on its campus which the college administration wants to renovate. The college currently has more than 4,000 students and it was in need of a new space for conducting regular classes. Debashis Sarkar, Principal of Chandannagar College said, “We do not have space to hold the ideal number of classes now that the choice-based credit system has come into force. So the second campus is very much needed”. The second campus is being built after the college received a grant of Rs 3.25 crore from the state government for this purpose. The college had submitted a proposal for the new campus in 2017 and it was later approved by the government. The Principal further said, “We have been selected to receive another grant of Rs 2 crore under the Rashtriya Uchchatara Siksha Abhiyan 2.0, a scheme jointly funded by the Centre and the state. The college has received Rs 1 crore from it, out of which an elevator is being installed, the biology laboratory is being upgraded and an office management software is being bought. Another Rs 1 crore will be utilized for digitizing the library. We have more than one lakh books, including some old books in French. Digitization will allow students easy access”. The college also has plans to set up a language laboratory, a computer laboratory, a digital archive and a heritage research center in its campus.
