Calcutta University’s new scholarship

Former student of Calcutta university Ashim Bhattacharya has left behind $80,000 for his Alma mater. Professor of physiology and pathology at Louisiana state university medical centre in New Orleans had studied at Calcutta university for his B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD in physiology.  

Prof. Bhattacharya who died in June, 2017 is going to have a scholarship named after him. Applying the exchange rate, the sterling amount of the scholarship is going to be around ₹ 58,70,000.

Last year September the late professor’s wife Bani had written to Calcutta university ushering a scholarship for needy but meritorious students of physiology.

According to a senior official of the university all the proposal was approved by the syndicate at the last meeting before puja. Vice chancellor Sonali Chakravarti stated:

we will announce how the scholarship will be disbursed after the decision is confirmed at the next meeting of the syndicate. The donation will help the university stand by meritorious students facing financial challenges.”
