Calcutta University to organize open library soon

Libraries of Calcutta University established in 1857, proposed a remarkable opportunity for setting up open library to the public which nowadays are offered by other universities as well. An amount of rupees 5 Crores was authorized to the CU by the Directorate of Library and Information Science under the state government, out of which rupees 2 crores are splurged for education purpose.

The vice chancellor of Calcutta University, Sonali Chakravarty Banerjee said that another means for collecting funds is giving access of libraries to the outsiders who can the acquire knowledge from different books allocated there. New books are being purchased to increase the content of information for the people and an amount of rupees 54,000 were spent for the same. Students preparing for competitive exams or crack any tests can find ample access to all the books including English and well as the medium of language. Novels, poetry books will also be available in the library for the literature lovers. Separate area will be confined for the students of films. For their work related purpose, screen and CDs will also be provided. Similarly, a separation section of women based books for academics will be sculpted in the library as well as different segments for sports and Anglo Indian book will be obtainable.

The librarian of Calcutta University, Soumitra Sarkar also revealed that the libraries will be strictly confined only for reading purpose and will only be accessible to those who have a valid identification. The central library of CU is located in the College Street area and other seven libraries campus are situated in seven different locations of Kolkata. An accessibility of 12 lakhs books can be witnessed in these libraries from which 2.5 lakhs books are from the 15th century which holds its historical importance.

Timing for central library: 10 A.M to 8 P.M

Timings for departmental library: 10 A.M to 5.30 P.M (except holidays)
