Business Lessons From The Octopus!

You would have to turn to science fiction or go to outer space to find an animal more alien than an octopus. It can change color and shape. It can taste with its skin. It has a beak like a parrot, venom like a snake and ink like an old pen.

Humans are really good at picking up patterns. Animals are a good thing to study; they actually have to put up with a lot of the things similar to us, like food rationing, learning from the environment and adapting. A great example would be the octopus. It’s actually one of the most intelligent sea-dwelling creatures on the planet. With its eight arms and deep sea environment, it has to stay on top of its chain. This is especially like a business situation, let alone all the things we have to deal with in life.

Below we’ll take a look at the appealing characteristics that an octopus possesses and what we can learn from it; it may surprise you!

Three Hearts:

The octopus actually has three hearts. In a sense, we do too our mind, body, and spirit. In tandem, they work together to accomplish a lot of important things. Start thinking about your health in terms of more than just not getting a serious infection. Think of your tasks as dealing with your three hearts. Your mind will get you far, but sometimes you need physical strength. If you’re negative about everything, you’ll find yourself just as stuck as someone else.

Observing others' Behaviour:

Without observing the world, you’re in the dark. Observing goes hand in hand with learning. An octopus will observe, study and interpret its environment. Business is conducted in the same manner. It takes a lot of intelligence and observance, something we share in common with one of the ocean’s most advanced creatures. You need to observe how someone else is handling a situation, either for the best or for the worst. Knowing a mistake someone else made, helps you avoid it yourself.

Adaptability:

The octopus has to adapt, much like we do. Consider your work situation or something you’re dealing with in life. The sea floor is changing with new creatures and flows coming into its habitat, meaning it has to stay on top of its world at all times. We humans face similar situations; everything in life is variable and circumstances change all the time. While doing business, you experience this even more, especially when you’re faced with meeting deadlines and unforeseen complications come up.

Complex Environments:

An octopus has its issues as well, but it learns to deal with the landscape as it comes to it and even plans ahead. It’s good to keep this in mind and apply it to your own life. Stay on top by anticipating the habitat and the things related to it. In our world and in the grand landscape of business, things get complex. There are a lot of complications and facets tied to just about every decision we make, meaning that if you’re not able to stay with the flow, you’re left behind.

Recreation:

You can’t exist with all work and no play. Everyone deserves a break and so does the octopus. It has toys that, it will sometime play with deep under the sea. Perhaps your toy is a book that you read for leisure or even a gaming console, it’s the same for the octopus – think of all that pressure from the water pushing it down to the oceanfloor!

Above are just a few of the many things th octopus does every day to survive. Apply them in your life and you’ll see the same satisfying results. We need ink for writing and they use it to fool rivals. We have much to learn from them. Octopuses show us different paths of thinking and vividly different ways of being. They take our minds in directions far more essential than fear.
