Boat license for fishermen in Sundarbans

The state government will issue as many as 1,700 boat license certificate (BLCs) to fishermen in Sunderban. This license will allow them to run their business venture smoothly for catching fishes and crabs. A majority of people reside in the mangrove forest area are totally dependent on fishing and catching crabs for their livelihood, keeping in mind such decision was taken.

As per the report, the state government issued 4,700 BLCs to the fishermen. Forest minister Binay Krishna Burman said, “We want needy and poor fishermen to reap the benefits of BLC. I have instructed the committee responsible for dealing with the issues of fishermen to ensure this.” A meeting was held on 10th November by the government officials including State Forest, Fisheries and Sunderban Affairs department and the Fishermen’s Association at Aranya Bhavan in Salt Lake. Under the strict instruction of West Bengal’s Chief Minister Hon’ble Mamata Banerjee, a committee was formed in 2017 to represent the ground level issues of fishermen and ensure they dwell a decent living.
