Bhutni Bridge inaugurated

A 1.5 KM long bridge was recently inaugurated by the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Bannerjee which connects the island of Bhutni with the main land. The bridge stands over the river Ganga and the project to build it there was taken up by the government back in 2013.  Mamata Banerjee had earlier said, “I was first approached by Sabitri Mitra after she became a MLA from Manikchak and joined my cabinet to construct a bridge to Bhutni. My visit to Manikchak made me feel that the bridge was a must for lakhs of people who live on the island. That is why I decided to build the bridge spending as much money as required”. The island of Bhutni has three panchayats and it is well known for agricultural production. Before the construction of the bridge, people living here were connected to the mainland of Malda district only through boats and there were no road connectivity. The lack of road connectivity had slowed down the development of this island and people living here demanded a bridge for a very long time. Finally a bridge is constructed to connect Bhutni to the main land of Malda and it took almost six years for completion of the 1.5 KM long bridge. The project was worth Rs 131 crores
