Bengals Sheetal pati won coveted UNESCO ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’ status

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has registered Sheetal pati (which translates to cool mat), from the Cooch Behar district, West Bengal as an ‘intangible cultural heritage’.

The gradual decline of Sheetal pati weaving was arrested by the proactive efforts of Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who helped this traditional product gain global reognition.

As a result, Sheetal Pati weaving artisans have earned respect and recognition. Through 50 self help groups, promoted by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) of the State Government, the weavers have access to loans on easy terms.
