Bengali Film in Oscar Race

Indian film has something to rejoice this year for the Oscar. Well, India’s official entry, Newton didn’t feature in the list for the Oscar, yet India still has a chance. All thanks to the Bengali film ‘Roktokorobi’ that has been long listed for the general category of the Academy Award (Best Picture).

The film was inspired by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s drama based in the same name. "Roktokorobi" has been selected along with 340 others. Among the 340 selected movies of which nine will be shortlisted for the Best Picture Oscar. 

Roktokorobi is the first Bengali film to make it to the Academy Awards general category long list stated the movies director Amitabha Bhattacharya.  

Although the film is competing against movies like "Call Me By Your Name", "Missouri", "Lady Bird", "The Post and Dunkirk". The long list was announced on December 19. 

The movie was appreciated for its script, music, background score and excellent work of the actors. The team is hoping for the best as it has received a positive response from the jury members. Roktokorobi was released on July 28 in India starring actors Kaushik Sen, Shantilal Mukherjee, Rahul and Mumtaz Sorcar, among others. 

Bhattacharya has also added that the movie now has the chance of getting selected in other sub-categories such as Best Music, Best Cinematography, Best Actor, and Best Actress and so on. They must have a running time of more than 40 minutes, and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.

Final nominations will be announced on January 23, and the ceremony will be held on March 4.
