Bengal celebrates Rabindra Jayanti

Bengal is celebrating the 158th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore with great enthusiasm on Thursday, May 09. The Noble laureate was born at Jorasanko on May 9, 1861 to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. Tagore happened to be the youngest among his siblings. He was the first non-European to win the Noble Prize in Literature in 1913. Tagore brought a huge change to Bengali literature and music and reshaped it during the late 19th and early 20th century. He has always been an integral part of the culture of Bengal and people still like to take refuge in his songs and poems. His birthday, Rabindra Jayanti is almost like a festival in Bengal which people celebrate through cultural programs. Like previous years, this year too his birthday is being celebrated whole heartedly in Bengal with artists, dancers and elocutionists paying their tribute to Tagore through the various forms of art. A special program is arranged in Jorasanko, the birthplace of Tagore which started from 6 am in the morning and will continue throughout the day. The Information and Cultural Affairs department too has organized a celebration outside Rabindra Sadan where eminent artists like Jayati Chakraborty and Agnibha Bandyopadhyay among others will be performing. Another program at Rabindra Tirtha has been organized by the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) in New Town. Not just major programs, but Rabindra Jayanti is also being celebrated in several housing complexes, schools, colleges and offices across the state.
