Batteries to last longer now

Researchers from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have recently developed a new technology by working on a new class of materials  to be used in batteries in order to make lithium batteries last longer. Lithium batteries are omnipresent – be it our smartphones or electric cars. Inspite of being so useful, there’s only one drawback to it – it can’t last long enough as we want them to. However, the researchers have discovered a new high entropy material to be used as cathodes in order to make lithium batteries last longer. Lithium-ion batteries can’t last long enough due to the poor cycling stability of the cathodes present in them. Also, the lithium batteries lose its power-retention capacity with every charge and discharge due to the side reactions that occur between the electrolyte and the active material, making it more vulnerable. Researchers from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have now discovered new materials for the cathode which will help the batteries in improving the lithium-ion storage properties and in improving the charge-cycle performance. These new materials for the cathode are also easily available on the planet. SS Bhattacharya, one of the researchers from Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras said, "The uniqueness of our cathode materials is that despite their high chemical complexity, they have phase purity. Conventional batteries have nickel-based cathode, however, these batteries tech contains ions of five metals -- manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc -- together they’re called High Entropy Oxides”. "Better lithium-ion storage and cycling stability are not the only advantage of the HEOs developed in this collaboration. We were able to vary the anions with the use of these HEOs", added Bhattacharya.
