The high tension drama revolving around the capture and release of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman by Pakistan had attracted so much media attention that the moustache of the fighter pilot has become in vogue.
Men across the country are now visiting parlours to get a long moustache like Varthaman. Talking to Jiyo Bangla, celebrity hairdresser Jawed Habib said that interested customers were pouring in at a majority of the 843 outlets across the country. “It is true that people have started adopting his style and I believe it will continue for sometime. They have started calling it Abhinandan moustache. It is because his moustache has an attitude, a body language in itself. It has become a symbol of courage,” Habib said. He added that the moustache was especially popular in south India because of the hair thickness it requires for the style. “South Indians have that kind of facial hair thickness required for styling it like that,” he said.
Kolkata-based hair stylist Shaan Khan said that many have walked into his salon on Shakespeare Sarani in central Kolkata with similar requests. “We should be proud of him and the fact that people are trying to copy his style. It is a unique moustache which he carries with a lot of machismo and dignity,” Khan said talking to Jiyo Bangla. He also offered a solution to those who dont have such thick moustache but wished to put up such style. “Instant colouring will help people with thin moustache to get a similar look,” he said.
Beauty experts said that a similar kind of moustache was popular in 2013 when the Tamil action thriller Singam II was released. “The film starred Tamil superstar Suriya. After a Hindi dubbed version of the film called Maih Hoon Surya was released the moustache of Suriya which is a shade closer to Abhinandan’s gained some popularity but this time it seems to have become a craze,” said Md Mansoor, owner of a south Kolkata salon and a hair dresser himself. “I have been getting at least five such requests everyday since he was released,” Mansoor said.
Several pictures of Varthaman’s moustaches have also been doing the rounds on social media.
