A guide to Anglo-Indian Kolkata

Kolkata has always been a hub for different cultures, people and traditions. Here’s a guide to the history, food and culture of the Anglo-Indian community in Kolkata.

  • Retro Anglo Music- Trincas

Trincas sees a predominant Anglo-Indian band playing Anglo classics like ‘Red Red Wine’ and ‘Alice’ every day, on and from 9 pm. If you are lucky, you might even learn a few authentic Anglo dance steps from the people on the floor.

  • Street Food at Bow Street

If you want to grab authentic Anglo-Indian dishes, Bow Street is where you go. There is a number of inconspicuous shops that sell beef, barkakhanis (a chewy flatbread, found on the Anglo breakfast platter), coconut patties and pork roast. You can even give Terreti Bazaar a try.

  • Anglo 101

The Derozio Anglo-Indian Research collection is a place where you can dig deep into the history of Anglo-Indians. It has every publication including books, letters, and documents as well as research papers written by or on Anglo-Indians.

  • Dalhousie Institute

The DI is the hub of Anglo-Indian culture. You will find authentic dressing styles, traditional dishes-chilli beef, beef steaks, yellow rice and members with a rich Anglo-Indian family history. On Monday, the bar here is open to over ten Kolkata clubs and you can fix a date for an interaction over drinks.
