A Bookworm’s Delight!

Imagine a world with no stories or books. Surely it would be a void of a world, indeed! To encourage the readers 23rd April is celebrated as World Literature.

But, why April 23? On this day in 1616 pioneers in the world of literature like Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. Not just death, 23rd April is also saw the birth of for many prominent authors, such as Maurice Droun, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabakov, Josep Pla and Manual Mejia Vallejo. UNESCO payed a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this day, the organisation marked this day as World Book Day.

To do the same, Oxford Bookstore in Kolkata organised an event for the bookaholics with on-spot book-cover designing competition for the participants. When asked what made them opt for such competitions? They said- A book-cover is the first thing that catches the eye of a bookworm while searching through the stacks. Often it happens that the final call is made right after we fall in love with the bright, attractive and vibrant book-cover. Such competition is conceptualized to encourage the extraordinary work of illustrators.

Well, not just World Book day. 23rd April is also Copyright Day and William Shakespeare’s death anniversary. This will be the 24th edition of World Book Day and Copyright Day. Not to mention the Shakespeare’s inspired menu is still on at Oxford Book store, Kolkata.
