70-Years of Adoption of Indian Constitution

26th November 2019 will mark the 70 years of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. It was first adopted on 26th November 1949 and it came into effect on 26th January 1950. 26th January is hence celebrated as the Republic Day of India. The constitution of our country is known to be the world's longest constitution. To commemorate the 70 years of the adoption of the Indian constitution, a joint sitting of both the houses of parliament will be held on 26th November. The joint sitting on that special day will be addressed by President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime minister Narendra Modi. According to sources, in addition to the members of the parliament the joint sitting is expected to be attended by former presidents and prime ministers as well. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, who is also the Rajya Sabha chairman may make intervention on the event that day. The event will be similar to the midnight session of both Houses of Parliament, held in June 2017 to launch the new indirect tax regime GST. This kind of joint sitting was organized in 1997 when the Parliament celebrated 50 years of Independence Day. During that time special midnight sitting of the two houses was held.
