Movie Review: Kagojer Nouko

A freedom fighter loses his family due to a chitfund scam and vows to fight for justice.

The film couldn't be released in a better time. West Bengal is in a state of uproar due to the chit fund scam and when a movie, dealing with exactly the same topic, releases in the midst of this controversy, one must appreciate the timing. Moreover, watching the current affairs unfold, the director and the producer have played up the topicality in the promotions. Having veterans like Victor Banerjee and Soumitra Chatterjee in the cast also helped. But, if you are thinking of watching the movie for its subject or cast, think twice — the film disappoints.

In the 100 years of Indian cinema, there are some films which are magical, some cerebral, some entertaining and some not worthy of your time and money. This film falls into the last category. All the factors — direction, acting, editing, music, cinematography — are below standard. It tells the story of an honest man (Victor Banerjee) fighting against a huge financial scam that took away his wife and son's life. A temperamental police officer (Rajesh Sharma) and his son's journalist girlfriend ( Bidita Bag) help him in the process. Here, the director brings in the elements of terrorism, border security problems of two neighbourhood countries, communal disharmony and so much more that the story loses focus.

The bizarre storyline begs one question — what makes actors like Soumitra Chatterjee and Victor Banerjee accept these roles? It's just Rajesh Sharma as IB officer Arvind Singh who does a good job.

Director Partha Sarathi Joardar should follow one honest piece of advice. If he wants to make a film on a serious issue like this and if he wants to make a change, he can definitely do away with the sleazy item numbers. They leave a bad taste in the mouth.
